The Crab Nebula
The wreck of a star that Chinese astronomers watched explode in the year 1054 - bright enough to see by day for three weeks. Nine hundred years on, the debris is still flying outward at a thousand miles a second.
Cassiopeia A
A supernova remnant only about 340 years old, the youngest known in our galaxy, seen in infrared, visible and X-ray light at once. Each colour is a different temperature of the same wreck; the elements are sorted in shells, like an onion cut open.
The Barcode of a Star
The same rainbow-with-lines that hangs in The First Light, hung again here for a different reason: the lines are the census of what a star contains, and the census changes with a star's age.
Ashes in the Hand
A cut slice of a stone that fell on Mexico in 1969: grey rock speckled with round grains and white flecks. The white flecks are the oldest solid matter anyone can hold - condensed before the Earth existed, from the cloud the Sun formed in.
