The Job Is Maintenance
Most hours worked in orbit are not exploration. They are inspection, replacement, cable-routing and torque. The Hubble servicing missions saved a telescope with hand tools and patience — five visits, thirty-two spacewalks.
The Tether Rule
Nothing is held. Everything is attached. A tool released in orbit does not fall — it leaves, at the speed you let it go, and becomes debris that outlives you. The discipline is absolute and it is taught first.
The Glove Is the Hard Part
Pressurised gloves resist every closing of the hand. Hours of gripping produce fingernail injury and forearm exhaustion. The suit is a spacecraft, and the glove is its most stubborn engineering problem.
The Sun Comes Up Every Ninety Minutes
A worker in low orbit passes through sixteen sunrises a day, swinging between roughly +120°C in sunlight and −150°C in shadow. The suit manages that range so the body does not have to.
Two People, Always
No one goes outside alone. The buddy rule is not sentiment; it is the only recovery plan that has ever worked. Each crew member can retrieve the other, and each carries a jet pack for the failure the tether does not catch.
Alexei Leonov Could Not Get Back In
The first spacewalk, 1965. His suit ballooned in vacuum until he could not bend to re-enter the airlock, and he bled pressure from it to fit — a decision made alone, in minutes. Every suit since is designed around that ten minutes.
