To Go Faster, Slow Down
Orbital motion is counter-intuitive: fire forward and you rise into a slower, higher orbit; fire backward and you drop and speed up. Every rendezvous begins by unlearning what the body expects.
The Hohmann Transfer
The cheapest route between two circular orbits is an ellipse touching both — two burns, and a great deal of waiting. Efficiency in space is usually paid for in time.
The Rocket Equation Is Merciless
Every extra kilogram of payload demands exponentially more propellant, because the propellant must also be accelerated. This single equation explains why rockets are almost entirely fuel.
Launch Windows
A target does not wait. Geometry opens a door for minutes and closes it for months — and to Mars, for twenty-six months. Scheduling, not thrust, is often the binding constraint.
The Gravity Assist
A spacecraft steals a fraction of a planet's orbital momentum and leaves faster than it arrived — for free, as far as fuel is concerned. Voyager 2 reached four planets on a geometry that recurs every 175 years.
Lagrange Points
Five places where the pull of two bodies and the motion of a small third balance. Telescopes are parked there because the arrangement holds itself, which is a mathematical result before it is an engineering convenience.
