Tolerance
A drawing that says 50 mm means nothing. A drawing that says 50 mm ±0.05 is an instruction. Every argument about whether a part is good is settled by that second number, and learning to choose it is learning to be an engineer.
Interchangeable Parts
Before tolerance, every musket was fitted by hand and no part fitted another. Afterwards, a part made in one shop fitted a machine in another — which is the whole industrial revolution compressed into one idea.
The Lathe Makes the Lathe
A machine shop is the only place that can build itself. Maudslay's screw-cutting lathe of 1800 could cut the screws for the next lathe, more accurate than itself. Machine tools are the tools that reproduce industry.
Measurement Before Cutting
Callipers, micrometer, dial gauge, surface plate. Nothing is cut in this room until it has been measured twice, and nothing is accepted until it has been measured again. The K-6 bench trains this habit at seven; here it has consequences.
CNC — The Same Craft, Written Down
A numerically controlled mill does exactly what a skilled machinist does, except the sequence is a file rather than a memory. The judgment did not disappear; it moved upstream into the person writing the file.
Safety Is the First Skill
Guards down, sleeves rolled, hair tied, eyes covered, and never a hand where the tool is going. The shop teaches this before it teaches cutting, because the shop is the first place in a child's education where carelessness is expensive.
