The Wager Landing

Landing 10 — the device is the wager and the clock: the deadline plot. Standing text: from Around the World in Eighty Days, Verne in the 1873 Towle translation (the translation is the rights object, and this one is clear). Entered from the street like every other landing: no rung depends on another.

from Around the World in Eighty Days
The device: the wager and the clock. Phileas Fogg says the whole world can be crossed in eighty days - and bets twenty thousand pounds that he can do it. A promise with a clock in it drives every page after. "I will bet twenty thousand pounds against any one who wishes, that I will make the tour of the world in eighty days or less. Do you accept?" A wager is a let's-pretend with rules: what must happen, by when, or else. Read the bet again. What exactly did Fogg promise - and what did he never promise?
